Here you'll find information about current and upcoming long-term assignments & projects.
Please note that these are subject to change.

The Math Interview The goal of this assignment is for you to discover where, when and how math is used around you and by people who are familiar to you.  You will be graded according to how thorough your interview is and how your responses are written (or typed) ( see Writing Rubric). To get a top grade, you must include thought-provoking follow-up questions.
  • Choose an individual to interview.  This person can be a family member, neighbor or friend.
  • Tell the person what the goal of your interview is.
  • Interview the person according to the questions below.
  • Take notes - do NOT write your complete answers during the interview - you will compile them afterwards.
  •  Review your notes and ask any follow-up questions.
  • Finally, write your final responses from the interview.  This MUST be done on separate sheets (NOT on this sheet).  You may type the interview or write very neatly.
  • At beginning of interview, state whom you interviewed
  • First write the question that you asked
  • Then write the response to the question
  •  Remember to include follow-up questions
  • Please staple all papers together and put your name and block on each one.

THE MATH INFOMERCIAL PROJECT
Math Infomercial Project  Goal:  To develop and perform an infomercial that demonstrates “comparing and scaling” through mathematical comparisons using ratios, percents and differences.  F Infomercials will be performed on _______________.  If not doing a live performance, your final product on CD must be submitted BY ____________.  CRITERIA: Each “infomercial” must include the following and will be graded according to the rubric which will be provided.

1.         A MINIMUM of 3 of EACH comparison (ratio, percent, difference) must be effectively used, for a minimum total of 9.  More comparisons used in a creative and effective way may increase your grade.

2.         Your infomercial may be about an existing product or one that you have created.  It must be appropriate for school and be pre-approved by Mrs. Bowden by ________________.

3.         Your group must write a script which must be submitted to Mrs. Bowden on _________________.

4.         All members in the group must participate in the planning and in the performance.  Groups may elect to have a “director” who assists with lines, props, etc.  Include an “introduction” sign to be shown at the beginning of your presentation.

5.         Your comparisons must be realistic, mathematically sound and correct.  Correct math vocabulary must be used.

6.         The length of your infomercial must be between 5 and 8 minutes long.  If you find that it may be longer than 8 minutes, see Mrs. Bowden for prior approval.

7.         No Silliness!  Take your infomercial seriously, especially during video recording.

8.         Be Creative!  Make some unique mathematical connections so that your infomercial stands out.  You may use costumes and props as long as they are school appropriate.  (Remember the introduction sign.)
